Is it safe to delete ~/Library/pnpm/store?
Your tools make it again on their own. The cost is a slower next run.
- What it is
- Every package version pnpm has downloaded, kept once so each project can share it instead of storing its own copy.
- Made by
- pnpm
- If you remove it
- Projects that are already installed keep working. pnpm downloads a package again the next time a project needs one it doesn't have.
- How it comes back
- Nothing to do, pnpm refills the store as projects need packages.
The tool's own commands
pnpm store path“Returns the path to the active store directory.”From pnpm.io/cli/store, read 3 Nov 2026.pnpm store prune“Removes unreferenced packages from the store.” Unreferenced packages “are packages that are not used by any projects on the system.”From pnpm.io/cli/store, read 3 Nov 2026.
The proof
- Verified by
- vendor documentation and local test: pnpm documentation, “pnpm store”, section “prune” (https://pnpm.io/cli/store), “pnpm will download them again”; and the FAQ on the store and node_modules (https://pnpm.io/faq). Proved in a scratch store on 10 Oct 2026 with pnpm 10.17.0 (files cloned into node_modules on APFS): store deleted, then the project's code, pnpm install, pnpm add and pnpm install --frozen-lockfile each ran with exit 0 and no prompt.
- Checked on
- macOS 26.6.2, pnpm 10.17.0
- Catalogue
- Spaceific's rules.json 1.2.0, 2 Nov 2026. The whole file.
