Your files stay on your Mac.

Spaceific reads your disk to explain it. Here is exactly what it does with that, and what it sends, and when.

On your Mac

  • Spaceific reads file sizes and folder names to build the map. It does this on your Mac.
  • There is no account and no sign-in. No analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting.
  • It keeps its own records on your Mac: Cleanup History, Receipts and short summaries of past scans, so it can show what grew.
  • It works only while it is open. It never empties your Trash.

On the network

Spaceific itself makes no network request. The rule-file fetch and the update check are built but need a server address, and no build has one.

Only when you act:

  • In Clearance, Clear for a macOS update… and Ask macOS again run macOS's own softwareupdate -l. macOS then asks Apple which updates exist.
  • A link you click, such as the beta's download link or a tool's documentation in a rule's evidence, opens in your browser.
  • Send Feedback opens a draft in your mail app. You see every line, can remove any of them, and send it or not. The lines you keep leave your Mac when you send that email.

Done on your Mac, with no network: reading Time Machine's list of local snapshots (tmutil), the Recovery volume line (diskutil), opening System Settings, Reveal in Finder and Open Trash.

Planned for Pro, not built: a signed list of revoked licences, fetched at most once a day. A failed fetch never turns a licence off.

A shared Receipt

If you choose to share a Cleanup Receipt, the image shows totals, kinds of item and rule names. It never shows a path, a folder no rule names, or your name.

This website

  • No cookies, no analytics, no tracking pixels, no third-party scripts or fonts.
  • The forms (the waitlist, the beta application and the Disk Cheat Sheet) ask for an email and a few optional answers. Nothing else: never your name, a file path or a screenshot of your disk.
  • With each sign-up the site stores the answers you gave, the page you signed up on, the time, and which version of the consent text you agreed to. It also stores a random link code, so the confirmation and unsubscribe links work.
  • This is kept in a database on Cloudflare, which hosts the site. Emails are sent by an email provider.
  • You confirm your address first, with a link in an email. An address not confirmed within 30 days of that email is deleted.
  • To stop one address or one network from sending the form again and again, the site keeps a one-way hash of each, made with a secret key, kept for a day. Without the key, a hash cannot be turned back into the address.
  • Every email has an unsubscribe link: it opens a page with one button that unsubscribes you. Mail apps that support it unsubscribe you in one click. Every email also has a link to a page with one button that deletes everything stored about you.
  • The list is used only for what you agreed to. It is never shared or sold, and opens and clicks are not tracked.
