Spaceific for Mac · In development, closed beta next

A precision instrument for your Mac's storage.

See what fills your Mac, what made it, and what happens if it goes. Move only what you choose to the Trash, where you can put it back.

macOS 14+ Native Swift No account Files stay on your Mac

Eight categories of one real Mac, sized by storage, not astronomy. The builder's MacBook Air, 8 Oct 2026. Point at a planet, or the outer belt, to read it.

Your Mac isn't full of junk. It's full of developer data.

Build output, package caches, local AI models. Your tools leave them behind, and nothing tells you what they are. Spaceific does.

Why the numbers matter

Deleting is not the same as freeing.

A folder's size and the space you get back are two different numbers.

Replayed from a measurement on the builder's Mac, 6 Oct 2026.
  1. Clones share space

Delete one copy and nothing comes back.

  2. Snapshots hold space

Time Machine keeps deleted files until macOS removes the snapshot.

  3. The Trash holds space

Nothing is freed until you empty it.

So Spaceific shows Frees at least: the least you'll get back, measured before you choose.

Why deleted files free no space

Four steps. You decide each one.

Storage is a decision, not a button. Nothing moves until you confirm it.

  1. Map

One scan maps the whole Mac. 78 seconds for 2,031,677 files on the builder's MacBook Air M1.

  2. Understand

Open anything. Read what made it, what happens if it goes, how to get it back, and the least you will get back.

  3. Choose

Every item is listed on its own in the Review Cart. There is no Clean All. One confirmation moves them to the Trash.

  4. Undo

Put Back anything still in the Trash. After you empty it, a Receipt shows what was promised and what macOS reported.

No rule, no recommendation.

Every path Spaceific knows has a written rule, or says plainly that it has none. Today the catalogue holds 27 paths, 7 of them rated.

Rebuildable

Your tools make it again on their own. The cost is a slower next run.

What it is
Build files and search indexes Xcode creates while compiling and browsing your projects.
If removed
Source code, git history and project settings are not stored here, so a normal project loses nothing you cannot rebuild.
Get it back
Open the project in Xcode and build it (Product → Build, ⌘B), Xcode recreates DerivedData automatically.

rules.json · ollama-models

Ollama models

~/.ollama/models

Review first

Likely recoverable, but it costs you something to get back. Read before you move it.

What it is
The model files Ollama downloaded so it can run an AI model locally on this Mac, without sending anything over the network.
If removed
The named model is removed and has to be downloaded again before anything that uses it can work, or built again, if you made it yourself with ollama create.
Get it back
Run: ollama pull <model>:<tag> (for example, ollama pull qwen2.5:3b).

Clearance

Need room? Say how much.

Type the space you need, or pick the macOS update. Spaceific fills your Review Cart with the safest items to get there: what your tools rebuild on their own first, largest first. You still confirm every move.

Measured on the builder's Mac, 9 Oct 2026: 12.17 GB free, so a 20 GB target needed 7.83 GB more.

Every item, on its own.

No Clean All. Anything without a proven rule needs its own tick before it can move.

  • ~/.npm/_cacache Rebuildable
  • ~/.cargo/registry Rebuildable
  • ~/.gemini No rule yet

I understand Spaceific has not verified what removing this does.

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

How is this different from a Mac cleaner?

Spaceific measures before it acts, and it explains before it asks. Everything it recommends has a written rule: what made it, what happens if it goes, and how to get it back. Before you choose, it reads the disk and tells you the least you will get back. It moves only what you pick, only to the Trash, and you can put it back from there.

It does not clean RAM, speed anything up, scan for malware or run in the background. It is an instrument for one job: your storage.

Does it ever delete anything on its own?

No. There is no Clean All button and no automatic cleaning. Items go into a Review Cart, each listed on its own, and nothing moves until you confirm. Spaceific moves items to the Trash and never empties it.

Can I get my files back?

Yes, while they are in the Trash. Cleanup History lists every move with its original path, and Put Back returns an item to where it was. Before any move, Spaceific checks each item again.

Why "Frees at least" and not one number?

Because the space you get back depends on more than a folder's size. Cloned files share space, and Time Machine's local snapshots can hold space until macOS removes them. "Frees at least" is the floor, read from the disk the moment you look. Spaceific would rather promise less and be right. Read the details.

Does it need Full Disk Access?

For a complete map, yes. macOS doesn't let any app grant itself that, so Spaceific walks you through it. Some system areas stay unreadable even with it, and Spaceific counts those as "Not attributed" instead of guessing.

Does it handle Docker?

Not yet. There is no Docker rule in the catalogue, so Spaceific shows how much space Docker's folders take and recommends nothing. Docker volumes often hold databases; a rule for them will never suggest removing one.

Is it on the Mac App Store?

No. App Store apps must be sandboxed, and a sandboxed app cannot read and move files across your Mac. You will download it from this site.

Which Macs does it run on?

macOS 14 or later is the target. So far it has been run on macOS 26 only, on an Apple silicon Mac. The beta is built for Intel Macs too, but it has not been tested on one yet.

When can I use it?

The closed beta is taking applications at /beta. About 10 testers go first, chosen by hand. Beta testers get a free Founder licence. The beta build is not notarised yet; that comes before launch. If you only want to hear when Spaceific launches, join the waitlist instead.

Is it a subscription?

No. Free is free. Pro is one payment: $39 for the first 100 licences, then $59. Every 1.x update is included. If there is ever a 2.0, 1.x keeps working and you choose whether to upgrade. A licence covers up to 3 of your own Macs.
